Electrical panel upgrades in DuPage, Kane, Cook and Will Counties

A panel upgrade replaces your main electrical panel (the breaker box) with one that has more capacity and modern breakers. CPB Electric upgrades and replaces service panels, adds sub-panels and installs dedicated circuits for homes and businesses in DuPage, Kane, Cook and Will Counties.

What does a panel upgrade with CPB Electric include?

  • Service panel upgrades and replacements
  • Sub-panel additions for garages, additions and equipment
  • Dedicated circuits for EV chargers, appliances and other heavy loads
  • Panel repairs
  • Whole-home surge protection
  • GFCI and AFCI protection
  • Grounding and bonding improvements

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Most homeowners start asking when something stops working or when a new load is coming. These are the common reasons to have a panel looked at:

  • Breakers trip often, or every slot in the panel is already used.
  • You are adding a large load such as an EV charger, pool or spa equipment, or a major appliance.
  • The panel is decades old. Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels in particular are flagged by many electricians, and some insurers ask for them to be replaced.
  • Lights dim or flicker when large appliances start.
  • You smell burning, hear buzzing from the panel, or see scorched breakers. Turn off the main breaker and call right away.

Panel replacement, service upgrade or sub-panel: which fits?

These three jobs sound alike but solve different problems. An electrician can tell you which one you need after looking at the panel and your loads.

OptionWhen it fitsWhat it does
Panel replacementThe panel is old, damaged or a known problem brandSwaps in modern breakers and a safe panel at the same capacity
Service upgradeThe panel is full or new loads are comingRaises capacity, for example from 100 amps to 200 amps. Often involves a permit and coordination with the utility
Sub-panelYou need more circuits in a garage, addition or workshopAdds circuits fed from the main panel, if the existing service can carry the load

Does a bigger panel lower my electric bill?

No. A larger panel adds capacity, not efficiency. Your bill depends on how much power you use. The benefit is that the home can safely run more at once and has room for new circuits.

How does a panel upgrade work?

  1. Look at the panel and the loads

CPB Electric reviews the panel, the service and what you plan to add, then explains the options.

  2. Plan the work and the permit

The scope is set, and any permit and inspection your city or county requires are lined up before work starts.

  3. Schedule the shutoff

Power is off to the home while the panel is swapped. If the utility needs to disconnect or reconnect service, that is coordinated ahead of time.

  4. Replace, label and test

The new panel is installed, circuits are reconnected and labeled, and everything is tested.

  5. Inspection and sign-off

Where an inspection is required, it is scheduled and passed before the job is closed out.

What affects the cost of a panel upgrade?

Every panel job is different, so a fair quote starts with a look at the panel. These are the factors that move the price:

  • Panel size, for example 100, 150 or 200 amps
  • The condition and brand of the existing panel
  • Whether the meter base, service entrance or utility connection also has to change
  • How far the new panel is from the meter and how hard the walls are to reach
  • Permit and inspection fees set by your city or county
  • Extra circuits, surge protection and GFCI or AFCI breakers added during the job
  • Grounding and bonding updates needed to bring the system up to current code

Panel upgrades in the DuPage area

Many homes in the area were built decades ago. Census-based figures put the median year built for housing in DuPage County around 1978, which is why original panels and older circuit layouts are common.

Electrical codes are set locally. In the unincorporated areas of DuPage County, the 2020 National Electrical Code applies, and a new DuPage Building Code takes effect on January 1, 2027. Cities and villages adopt their own codes and permit rules, so the permit steps depend on where the property is.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need an electrical panel upgrade?
Frequent tripped breakers, a full panel, flickering lights when big appliances start, or plans for an EV charger or pool equipment are the usual signs. An old Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is another. An electrician can look at the panel and your loads and tell you whether an upgrade is needed.
Do I need a permit to replace my electrical panel?
Panel and service work is typically permitted and inspected, and the rules come from your city or county. Cities and villages in DuPage, Kane, Cook and Will Counties set their own permit steps. CPB Electric can tell you what applies to your address when you call.
How long will the power be off during a panel upgrade?
Power to the home is off while the panel is swapped, and the length depends on the job, the access to the panel and whether the utility has to disconnect service. CPB Electric will explain the plan and the shutoff before the work starts.
Can I add an EV charger without upgrading my panel?
Sometimes. It depends on the capacity your panel has left once the charger circuit is added. Older 100 amp panels often need an upgrade, while a panel with room to spare may not. An electrician checks the load before quoting the charger.
