EV charger installation in DuPage, Kane, Cook and Will Counties

A home EV charger install usually means running a dedicated 240-volt circuit and mounting a Level 2 charger in the garage or on an outside wall. CPB Electric installs EV charger circuits and chargers for homes in DuPage, Kane, Cook and Will Counties and checks that your panel can carry the added load.

What does an EV charger installation include?

  • A dedicated circuit for the charger, sized to the charger
  • Mounting the charger in a garage, carport or outside wall
  • A plug-in outlet or a hardwired connection, depending on the charger
  • A check of your panel capacity, and an upgrade if it is needed
  • Permit and inspection coordination where your city requires them

Plug-in outlet or hardwired charger?

Both work. The right choice depends on the charger and how you plan to use it. Check the charger's manual for its amperage before deciding.

OptionGood to know
Plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet)Easy to unplug and take with you. A 14-50 outlet limits a charger to about 40 amps of continuous charging
HardwiredNeeded for chargers that draw more current, such as 48-amp units on a 60-amp circuit. No outlet to wear out

Will my panel handle an EV charger?

The panel is usually the deciding factor. A Level 2 charger is a large, continuous load, so the electrician checks how much capacity your panel has left before quoting. Many older homes with 100-amp panels need a panel upgrade to add one, while a panel with room to spare may not.

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging?

Level 1 plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet and adds range slowly. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and charges much faster, which is why most owners install one at home. Level 2 is the work CPB Electric does.

How does an EV charger installation work?

  1. Choose the charger and the spot

Pick the charger and where it will mount. Shorter runs from the panel mean less wire and less work.

  2. Check the panel

CPB Electric confirms the panel has capacity for the new circuit and tells you if an upgrade is needed.

  3. Run the circuit and mount the charger

The dedicated circuit is installed, then the charger is mounted and connected as an outlet or hardwired.

  4. Test and inspect

The charger is tested, and any required inspection is scheduled.

What affects the cost of an EV charger installation?

The charger itself is one part of the price. These installation factors matter just as much:

  • Distance from the panel to the charger, and how the wire can be routed
  • Spare capacity in the panel, and whether it needs an upgrade
  • Wire size and conduit needed for the circuit
  • Plug-in outlet versus hardwired connection
  • Charger hardware, which you choose
  • A detached garage, which can mean trenching
  • Permit and inspection fees set by your city

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger at home?
A new 240-volt circuit is typically permitted and inspected, and the rules depend on your city or county. Plugging a Level 1 charger into an existing outlet is not new electrical work. CPB Electric can tell you what applies at your address.
Can I plug an EV charger into a regular outlet?
Yes, at Level 1. A standard 120-volt outlet works with the cord that comes with most vehicles, but it adds range slowly. A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240-volt circuit charges much faster, which is why most owners install one.
Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?
Only if the panel cannot carry the added load. It depends on the capacity left once the charger circuit is included. Older 100-amp panels often need an upgrade. The electrician checks the load before giving you a quote.
Can you install a charger in a detached garage?
Usually yes. A detached garage needs wire run from the panel to the garage, often underground, which adds to the cost. CPB Electric looks at the route and explains the options before the work starts.
